The area includes the islet of Sergitsi, north of Lemnos and islets southwest of the island. The Sergitsi islet is particularly interesting, as it hosts large seabird breeding colonies. The area also includes a wetland complex in central and eastern Lemnos, with seasonal lakes, extensive dunes, coastal wetlands and salt marshes, which is an important area for migratory waders and raptors, for wintering waterfowl and many other species of birds.
About 350 pairs of Eleonora’s falcon nest in the region.
The area is part of the Natura 2000 network (GR4110008), while its largest part is a Wildlife Refuge.
